JOE DOKES: Thank you, Jim Morrison, and welcome to Money Talk, everybody. We have a great lineup of topics scheduled for you today, but let's get right to the phones and take the first call now, shall we? Hello, caller, you're on Money Talk with Joe Dokes.
CALLER: What time is it to begin with?
JD: I'm sorry, madam, but are you asking me the time?
CALLER: Yes. Only I'm not a madam, I'm a mister.
JD: Um, well, the clock on the wall here says it's ...
CALLER: No, I want to know the time that your so-called "Financial Freedom" seminar starts on Tuesday.
JD: Oh, right, well, you'll need to call my office number to make your reservation because I don't ...
CALLER: I'm not interested in attending your seminar, silly, I just want to know when it starts.
JD: Well, we'll start promptly at 7 p.m.
CALLER: Thank you. (hangs up)
JD: OK, well, we're off to a shaky start on the phones again this week. Say, the number to call into the show today is 555-JOE-TALK; that's 555-JOE-TALK. And let's take another call now, shall we? Hello, caller, you're on Money Talk with Joe Dokes, CLU -- how can I help you today?
CALLER: Why do you have a 555 number?
JD: I beg your pardon, sir?
CALLER: Why do you have an 555 number for a local talk show? That's sort of idiotic, isn't it?
JD: Where are you calling from, sir?
CALLER: It's a local talk show, Joe, where do you think I'm calling from? I'm right here in town, just like you are.
JD: OK, that's a point well taken, I suppose. Do you have a financial question, caller?
CALLER: What is a Chartered Life Underwriter? Is that supposed to impress people or something?
JD: Well, the CLU designation requires a number of pretty tough exams before...
CALLER: My brother Ralph is an RHU. Isn't CLU just another name for RHU?
JD: Um, well, not really. No, in fact, not at all. Your brother's designation means he knows about health insurance whereas the CLU designation...
CALLER: Not anymore.
JD: I'm sorry, what did you say?
CALLER: My brother used to sell health insurance, but he sells mostly annuities now. Spandex annuities, he calls them.
JD: You mean index annuities, I think. Yes, well, very good, we're going to talk about those later in the program.
CALLER: Whatever. You should have a local number for the radio studio there, that's all. I mean, I'm really just trying to save you some money here. (hangs up)
JD: Okay, I see we have one more telephone call waiting, so let's get to that one and see about helping someone with some money problems. Hello, caller, you're on the air. What's up?
CALLER: Yeah, I'd like a pepperoni pizza.
JD: WHAT THE HECK? I mean, I'm sorry caller, can you repeat your question?
CALLER: Will you bring me the pepperoni?
JD: Caller, it sounds like you are saying "pepperoni."
CALLER: Yes, I want a pepperoni pizza, You'll bring it here?
JD: Sir, this is a live talk radio program and...
CALLER: No, I just want pepperoni, nothing else on the pizza.
JD: Poor guy thinks he's talking to a pizza takeout or something. Well, we get all kinds of calls here on Money Talk, folks, so we just take 'em as they come and roll with the flow. Okay, well, let's take a quick break and when I return, we'll talk about Spandex Annuities. Sorry, I mean index annuities. Money Talk will be right back after this quick message break. Geez, Jim, where do these nutsos come from?
ANNOUNCER: When the red light is on, that means you are still live on the radio.
JD: But it's on now! I'm still on the air? Then how in the ...
ANNOUNCER: This is Money Talk Stay tuned and Joe will be right back to answer all of your financial questions.
