“I think there’s a consensus emerging on how to save Medicare. … I see a consensus between centrist Republicans and centrist Democrats,” Ryan said at POLITICO’s Policy + Politics conference Dec. 6, a week before the Wyden-Ryan plan was announced. The new plan, which allows existing Medicare beneficiaries, as well as those who will age into the program over the next 10 years, to enroll in traditional Medicare, while moving toward a "premium support" program, has been fairly well-received by Republicans, despite the fact that it steps into bipartisan territory. The Wyden-Ryan plan is a good attempt at compromise, one that could help Ryan's star continue to rise.
