At 8.5 percent, the current unemployment rate is the lowest in three years, but there are still pockets of the community that face huge jobs challenges: for African-Americans, the unemployment rate is at nearly 16 percent; for Latinos, the percentage is 11 percent and rising. As President Obama bids for reelection this year, the positive stats are the ones that will get the most press, but they may not translate to much forward momentum. It would be much more relevant to examine the larger issues at hand, argues Zachary Karabell, rather than focusing exclusively on unemployment.
