Now that arguments before the Supreme Court have concluded over the health reform law, hindsight sets in. What if proponents of the health care reform law had presented health care not as a right, but a responsibility? This would have changed the debate and forced opponents of the law to defend the irresponsibility of people who don’t purchase insurance. It could have also been a better pushback against the freedom argument by saying people don’t have the right to make others pay for their health coverage through higher premiums. Some suspect proponents might have avoided this tack because liberals prefer talking about right than responsibility. Also, the responsibility argument could have been viewed as picking on the people who truly cannot afford insurance.
