Following Oracle’s purchase of Virtue and Salesforce.com’s purchase of Buddy Media, Microsoft announced it was buying Yammer, a Twitter-like platform for businesses, for $1.2 billion. Analysts do not see the acquisition of firms specializing in social media tools for businesses slowing down. On a shortlist of contenders for the next big acquisition are Atlassian, Huddle and Moxie. Atlassian makes tools for programmers, but broadened its focus when it acquired HipChat, a group discussion app. Huddle is a cloud-based service used to share files and collaborate on documents. Moxie helps monitor customers’ tweets, manage internal team projects, oversee the office’ intranet, and set up chat and email systems. Analysts, however, are showing concern that these sorts of deals have headed into highly speculative territory where the company value might not equal the asking price.
