NAIFA awards industry's highest honor

Richard A. Koob, AEP, CASL, ChFC, CLUC, was honored as the 2013 John Newton Russell Memorial Award recipient during a luncheon on Tuesday at the annual meeting and career conference of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, held in San Antonio.

In his acceptance speech, Koob said that he was "honored and humbled" by the award.

"This isn't all about me," Koob said, thanking his wife. "She believed in me sometimes more than I believed in myself."

"Everything you want to achieve in life is on the other side of fear," he added.

Koob entered the life insurance business in 1967 with Northwestern Mutual. He subsequently took a position in the home office as a recruiter in the company's College Marketing Division and then returned to the field as a financial representative in 1993.

Koob has received the NAIFA National Quality Award for 39 years and the National Sales Achievement Award for 18 years. He is a 38-year member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and a member of the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) and the organization's Legislative Circle for 19 years.

His history of service to the industry includes serving as captain of the MDRT Program Development Committee three times and chairman of the local and state MDRT Membership Communications Committee. Service to NAIFA includes director of the NAIFA Wisconsin Committee on Political Action since 1988.

Koob is additionally past president of the Waukesha Association and the Wisconsin Association. He is also the recipient of the 1982 and 1993 Waukesha Association

Distinguished Service Award and the 1991 recipient of the Wisconsin Association Distinguished Service Award.

Established by John Henry Russell in 1942 as a tribute to his father, John Newton Russell, the award recognizes the accomplishments and contributions made by an individual to the life insurance industry.

The John Newton Russell award is the most significant honor accorded by the life insurance industry to a living individual who has rendered outstanding services to the institution of life insurance "above and beyond the call of duty."

The award's namesake was an agency manager for Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles during the early part of the 20th century. A pioneering advocate of agent education, he served as president of the National Association of Life Underwriters from 1916 to 1917 and was one of the founders of The American College of Life Underwriters in 1927. joins the rest of the industry in congratulating Koob on earning this prestigious honor.
