TIME has some great advice to lower people's natural walls that you can use for public speaking, event networking, team motivation and even prospecting. Some of the advice comes from well-known authors, a comedian and even a professor. 
For example, which phrase will most likely prompt you to act: "don't miss it!" or "take this opportunity"? If you picked "don't miss it", it's because people are "more influenced by what they have to lose" by not listening to your advice, says Noah Goldstein, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA.
